This book comes with the by-line: 'a guide
from application to graduation' and it does exactly what it
says on the tin. This offers very thorough advice on all aspects
of student life starting with the
application process, working through the first few weeks at
university and the various issues that students most students
do and should have to deal with to the end of the experience
and entering the world of work.
I come to write this review with mixed feelings. In the main,
this is a very helpful and informative book offering sound
advice on practical and spiritual matters. I found that many
of Matt's observations ran true to my experience and those
of other people that I know. He deals with, not only the well
documented sex, drugs and rock and roll student life style,
but also the basics of how to live and operate independently.
My main criticism with this book lies in its simplicity. It
has replaced depth with breadth. This still makes it a valuable
read but if you are already a student or have already left
home, many of its observations and advice you will have already
learnt the hard way. Equally, whilst most will recognise the
student experience laid out in these pages, it does tend to
over emphasise the good and the fun, but neglects to emphasise
the financial struggle and the variety of student experiences:
some more negative than positive.
At the end of the day, the challenge that Matt gives to his
readers through out the book is one that is applicable to
all no matter who you are or what you do. It is to be a fully
engaging member of the sub-culture you find yourself in whilst
maintaining the integrity of what you believe. This is the
simplest of messages yet the hardest of tasks and any encouragement
along the way can only be helpful.
